Series 1 of this collection primarily covers the period from 1763 through Samuel McDowell Reid's death in 1869. There are also a few later items dealing chiefly with his estate.

A typescript report by leading engineers of the community outlining four unique plans for supplementing the Lexington, Virginia water-supply. At the time, the local resevoir and general supply was suffering from a lack of rain. The report includes data on the local springs (water output and elevations) and historical rain fall data for the vicinity.
